Safety is a major concern in the roofing industry, especially among Columbus roofers,as they are always working at heights and with heavy tools and equipment. This is also a top priority of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA).

OSHA puts great emphasis on fall protection in a national level for contractors working on projects with heights of at least six feet. These professionals will be the agency’s priority until the end of September this year.

The administration has Compliance Health and Safety Officers (CHSOs) who checks commercial and residential jobsites under stringent safety standards. Unfortunately, not all roofing contractors are aware of this.

On why many roofing contractors are unaware of it, Mark Paskell, founder of The Contractor Coaching Partnership about fall protection and OSHA rules, said in his interview with Remodeling magazine, “Commercial contractors have borne the cost of compliance because OSHA always visits their sites. So there’s a total lack of knowledge about OSHA in the residential sector. Plus there’s no requirement for OSHA training in residential.”

Although it is not required for residential contractors to train under OSHA, many are motivated to adhere to the agency’s safety standards to protect their roofers and clients.

“The contractor has a duty to provide fall protection systems, guard rails, or safety nets. Most people in the residential sector are opting for a fall protection system,” Paskell added.
